MS4 Information
Prospect Park Borough has an NPDES permit (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) issued by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) which regulates the Borough’s stormwater discharges from our MS4 (municipal separate storm sewer system).
This permit requires the Borough to implement and enforce a stormwater management program designed to reduce the discharge of pollutants from the MS4. This program consists of 6 areas known as MCMs (Minimum Control Measures) which are:
- Public Education and Outreach on Stormwater Impacts
- Public Involvement/Participation
- Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDD&E)
- Construction Site Stormwater Runoff Control
- Post-Construction Stormwater Management (PCSM)
- Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping
What is Stormwater?
When it rains, or when snow and ice melt, the water, also called stormwater, drains to low points in the streets where storm inlets are located. These inlets connect to the storm sewer system and ultimately discharge directly to creeks, carrying with it salt, leaves, oil, cigarette butts, and any other pollutant. Debris and pollutants that litter our driveways, sidewalks, and roads eventually end up in our waterways. Stormwater does not get treated!
You can help keep harmful pollutants out of our local waterways by doing the following:
- Limit your use of pesticide, fertilizers, and road salt. Always use the recommended amount.
- Don’t blow grass clippings or leaves into the streets.
- Please discard cigarette butts in designated containers.
- Please remember to pick up pet waste when walking your pet.
- Wash your car on your yard or use a commercial car wash.
- Please don’t litter
